The bus and rail travel bonus is a fantastic way to explore the towns, villages and mountains in the region – for free. Richard and family from London staying with us in July 2017 said; „Travelling around without a car felt good, we saw lots more than usual and knew it was doing the environment good. This is a big bonus for holidaymakers in Westendorf. Can’t understand how we didn’t hear about it earlier“! The best kept secret is that this offer includes free rail transport of cycles so that guests can easily explore the mountains and valleys around the region. If you are planning to arrive by rail, Wörgl is a 1hr 15 minute ride from Munich, for example. Simply cross over the platform at Wörgl and join the frequent connections to Westendorf. A charming village, ancient traditions, dreamlike mountains and really hospitable people
Traditions old and new thrive in Westendorf and the Brixen valley. One such special event is the over 360 year old Antlassritt that takes place on Corpus Christi. This is a religious procession by farmers from the towns of Kirchberg in Tirol, Brixen im Thale and Westendorf.
Click on the link to view image gallery… | ![]() |
The origins of the celebrations are unclear but tradition has it that the Antlassritt commemorates the 30 Years‘ War in the 17th century, when the villagers of the three communities beat back Swedish troops on the Klausenbach river. Every year, on the religious festival of „Fronleichnam“ – Corpus Christi – the farmers (exclusively men) ride to the „Schwedenkapelle“ chapel in Klausen near Kitzbühel in Tirol to commemorate their victory.

A Family Holiday in Summer
Westendorf is an ideal spot for young and old alike writes Heidi Harrison
I discovered Westendorf in Austria when I was still at school. Now married with two young children, I decided to take a summer holiday in Westendorf in the summer of 2017. Arriving with my brother and my children, we were welcomed into the Ruetz accommodation immediately and collected the weekly sheet of events from the tourist information office which is next door. We soon decided together which events and activities we would like to take part in. Top of the list was pony trekking.
We stayed in the Ruetz apartment self catering. We found this great value for money, everything fresh clean and modern. It is ideally situated in the middle of the alpine village, easily accessible to all the amenities especially the ice creams! The hardest decision was which flavour to try next.
If yours is an active family…
We spent a lot of time at the local swimming pool complex. That is so much fun for the children. Seeing them order „Pommes“ in German from the snack-bar is fantastic. That’s the way to learn another language.
With mountain lakes also close by you have a lot of choices for swimming. If yours is an active family (which we are) Westendorf was voted the best holiday.

We then decided to come back 3 weeks later as a family to let Daddy join in the fun We drove over from South East England bringing our bikes.
The best holiday that the children have ever had apparently.
We went on lots of the bike rides that are all signposted including down to the next village, Hopfgarten, to go to their swimming pool and lake, the Aquarena. Mini golf and cars.
Buy liftpasses for the region
The mountains in this part of the Tirolean Alps are just breathtaking to look at but also to walk up and down. Or, as we did, bought lift passes for the region. Each of the local mountains included in the lift passes has fun family activities to take part in, the children that can’t walk any further as they are insisting legs are dropping off, suddenly start running onto the next activity to either a marble run or the next witches water activity. Westendorf Alpinolino Fun Trail
Each mountain experience has been well thought through to make the excursion for both children and adults the best it can be.
My own childrens‘ top times were the marble run at the top of the Westendorf Choralpe mountain, the Hexenwasser at Söll and the Hoch Brixen Filzalmsee (lake) all with play areas.

One of the Best Winter Seasons Ever
„This has to be one of the best skiing seasons ever“, commented Andi Ruetz when we visited him in Sport Ruetz on the penultimate day of the 2018 season. The snow management in Westendorf is superb with piste teams maintaining top conditions throughout the winter.
Westendorf sits on a plateau in the sunny tirolean Brixen valley and is a very popular resort. It is an ideal starting point for winter-sports fans being an important link between the huge SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser Brixental (one of the world’s largest and modern ski areas) and the famous Kitzbühel / Kirchberg region. The village of Westendorf has much to offer and our modern, luxuary apartments at Sport Ruetz are right in the centre.
Boarders Playground
Snowboarders and freestylers can find one of the best funparks in Austria here – the boarders playground. Ski and snowbaoard fun knows no limits in Westendorf from the start of the winter season right through to Easter and the start of spring.
Highlights alongside the pistes are the excellently prepared cross country ski routes and the well prepared and maintained winter walking paths through beathtaking, peaceful, winter landscapes.
Westendorf – Top Class
Our superbly equipped apartments make for an easy to manage, trouble-free winter holiday. The village of Westendorf offers top-class restaurants and abundant night life with transport links to nearby facilities.
Breakfast in Westendorf, put on your skiis just outside the apartment and you’re off. Morning coffee and Torte at the top of Talkaser. Wienerschnitzel for lunch with friends above Kitzbühel. „English speaking guests have been greeted in Westendorf since George Ager opended the first ski-lift in 1948“ said ski teacher Richard D. from London. „The resort welcomes back many return winter sports enthusiasts from Ireland and the UK, families as well as skiers in their 60s, 70’s and 80’s.“

Winter 2017-18 Super Season Start
It’s been snowing in the mountains and in the village – lots – and piste preparations are reported in the local press to be better than in any previous season. Westendorf and the SkiWelt region openened for the weekend of 2nd – 3rd December and runs continuously from Saturday 08/12/2017 through to 08/04/2018. And that’s 1,000 km of slopes.
The early planning, going back to last season’s policy of stockpiling huge amounts of snow in insulated stores, has enabled long runs to be established earlier than ever before. The well below freezing spell of cold weather has seen the snow cannons in action and now the new snow has arrived. A final inspection of the Apartments Ruetz luxury self catering accommodation demonstrated exactly how best standards have been achieved. Warm and welcoming, from the quality of the finish, the superb facilities and the greetings by the staff (in English) upon arrival. We think nothing has been overlooked. This accommodation is hugely popular in Winter and summer alike. To find out more fill out the enquiry form on our main Sport Ruetz website or have a chat on the ‚phone with a member of our staff. +43 699 1989 6321 Contact details are at the foot of this page.
